Mother’s Day Breakfast Ideas

Belgian Waffle

Most moms look forward to Mother’s Day, and one of the greatest gifts for her is being pampered. There’s nothing better than waking her up to a ready-made breakfast to start the day right. I’ve compiled items that younger kids can put together practically by themselves, as well as some gourmet treats that can be made by older kids or with the help of an adult. Add coffee or tea, orange juice, eggs, yogurt, or fruit to complete the meal. Play soft music, and have the Sunday paper in reach. Serve breakfast in bed on a tray, or invite her to the kitchen to eat with the entire family. This is a Mother’s Day gift that every mom will appreciate!


For a Parisian breakfast, pick these up at The Little Chef  Pastry Shop by 9 AM or go to McCaffrey’s. Serve with butter, and Bonne Maman preserves.


Self made muesli is easy. Have the kids lightly crush some raisin bran in a bowl, add a spoon of quick oatmeal.  Have sliced almonds or pecan pieces, dried fruit, fresh berries and bananas, plain yogurt and honey or sweetened vanilla yogurt on the side.


Pick up some plain ones at Bagel Barn. Lightly toast them and present them with plain cream cheese, Scottish smoked salmon from Bon Appetit, horseradish, non-pareil capers, sliced red onions, and sliced heirloom tomatoes.

Belgian Waffles

My family and friends love my waffle recipe, so I thought I’d share it with you.

  • 2 sticks of room temperature butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon almond (my secret ingredient) or vanilla extract
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • pinch of salt

Cream butter and sugar until mixture turns pale yellow. Slowly mix in eggs and extract, then alternate adding 1 cup of flour, then 1 cup of water until all is mixed in. Blend in baking powder and salt. While batter is resting, turn on waffle iron. Once it’s pre-heated, make waffles as per waffle iron instructions. Makes about five 6-inch round waffles. Serve with any combination of whipped cream, fresh fruit, sliced almonds,or maple syrup.

  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 6 tablespoons chilled, sliced unsalted butter
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • Egg wash (egg beaten with 1 tbsp. water)

Pre-heat oven to 425° F

Sift dry ingredients into food processor and pulse in chilled butter until it looks like a course meal. Add the milk and pulse until the dough forms. Knead on lightly floured surface for a minute or so, then roll into a circle about an inch thick. Cut into 8 wedges and place on parchment or Silpat lined baking sheet. Brush top and sides with egg wash, and bake for about 10 – 12 minutes. Cool on rack for a few minutes, and serve with whipped or clotted cream and (strawberry) preserves.
