Get in the PINK with the Princeton YWCA

According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that there will be about 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women in 2011. More breast cancer awareness and support than ever before has thankfully disseminated across the country over the years thanks to organizations like the YWCA. On October 21, 2011, from 6-9:30 PM, the YWCA Princeton Breast Cancer Resource Center is hosting their 7th Annual In the Pink Fashion Show at The Westin Princeton. Their goal is to raise funds for free programs and services for breast cancer survivors, and those going through their treatments, which include support groups, wellness activities, a source library, a wig and prosthesis boutique, and a financial assistance fund.

The funds raised at In the Pink are crucial to their ability to meet the needs of local women and families affected by breast cancer.  100% of the evening’s proceeds go to support the YWCA Breast Cancer Resource Center’s free programs and services.

The breast prosthesis I received from BCRC allowed me to regain my ‘normal’ look and made my return to work so much easier, diminishing questions and explanations until I was emotionally ready to deal with them. It also increased my self-esteem which had been ravaged by the cancer treatments! ~ Deborah

The retreat really turned me around and lifted me up! I now have many strategies for taking care of myself, have much less fear, and know how to hopefully have fewer anxious moments. ~ Lynne

Dr. Dultz is one of the Princeton area’s premier breast surgeons, and a strong supporter of YWCA Breast Cancer Resource Center. Dr. Drimmer is a Princeton area reconstructive surgeon. Both refer many of their patients to BCRC for support and information services. Above right, Mary and Doreleena are both breast cancer survivors who walked in the show. Mary travels by bus from Trenton several times a week to participate in BCRC’s Mind/Body Wellness program classes.

The YWCA’s signature fundraiser will feature a fashion show with models who are survivors, those who’ve supported them, and doctors and nurses who’ve treated them. Local retailers are kind enough to supply clothing and accessories for the In the Pink fashion show, as well as for the auctions. The Breast Cancer Resource Center has raised $110,000 since 2005, and would like to continue providing free programs and services to local breast cancer patients. You can help by attending this wonderful event where there will also be a cocktail and hors d’oeuvre reception, 50/50 raffle with a $3,500 prize, a floral arrangement competition, and of course, the silent and live auctions.
